What is depression and how can you deal with it?
Depression is a rather common, but serious disorder because it causes symptoms that affect how you feel, act and think during the day. If you encounter a lot of stress and pressure without any way to relax and improve yourself or boost your image, you are bound to enter a depressive state rather soon. And these things are extremely problematic, to the point where depression has the potential to damage your entire life. But there are ways around it, all you have to do is to learn how to deal with depression and eliminate it from your life! It might be necessary for some people to visit a depression rehab center but for some there are alternative methods.
What are the signs and symptoms for depression?
These vary from one person to the other. But they usually revolve around having an empty, sad mood all the time, a constant sense of irritability, a feeling of pessimism and hopelessness, guilt and decreased energy or a constant sense of fatigue.
Depressed persons also have a feeling of helplessness and guilt, they can’t concentrate that well and they don’t sleep adequately or oversleep, depending on the situation. Depression can also bring in weight and appetite changes, headaches, digestive problems, pains and aches, not to mention suicidal attempts at times. So it’s rather dangerous to be depressed, and you need to treat it as fast as possible.
There are multiple ways to handle depression. One of them is to opt for medication, usually in the form of antidepressants. These will help you eliminate mood lifts, sleep problems and concentration issues. However, you can take them only for a few weeks, so you have to initiate a habit and continue even after the treatment stops.
Psychotherapies are good too because they help address mental and behavioral problems related to depression. Some great therapies in this regard include CBT, IPT and the problem-solving therapy, among many others.
Some people also choose to go for an electroconvulsive therapy. This is great for people with severe depression, however you should consider using medication first. If that approach doesn’t work, then ECT might work.
But you also need to change your lifestyle. Usually people that deal with depression don’t have a lot of free time and they end up handling lots of pressure. What you want to do is to exercise and become more active. On top of that, you need to set realistic goals for yourself and spend more time with people that you can trust and appreciate. Bringing in a sense of happiness into your life is extremely important. The last thing you want is to stay isolated. Postponing important decisions is better too, because you eliminate pressure and deal with less stress.
Even if dealing with depression is a huge chore, it’s something that you can do and you have the strength to eliminate it from your life. Is it a challenge? Yes, but it’s possible to remove depression from your life if you start working hard towards recovery. If you can’t do this on your own, asking for professional help might be the right answer, so try to keep that in mind!
