A Bit of Love For Your Dining Table

Thought of the day…

Hmmm…your dining table…how’s it looking? Do you actually dine there? Or does it serve a ‘higher’ purpose for storing things such as ironing, homework, the computer, etc?

In the past when I lived in a tiny apartment, my dining table made for the perfect storage spot rather than what it’s name suggested it should be used for.

When space is tight, when your bookshelf is overflowing, when you have teenagers that have not quite caught onto the whole put-your-own-stuff-away idea, when different schedules make eating together tricky, when the concept of TV dining is too hard to resist or when you seriously believe that laundry basket looks fine on display, it does become a challenge to get back to the original notion of having a table to actually dine at.

As someone who comes from a large family I know all too well that when teenagehood hits the house, not all dinner times coincide. So choose what works for your family…a time when you can all sit and enjoy a meal and a conversation. For a friend of mine, breakfast worked best in her house.

Change cannot happen without change…deep I know! So if you know that you need to get back to eating at the dining table, make a few adjustments to clear the space and delibrately create an inviting area for at least one daily meal.

Here’s a few ideas to help out:

If you have a bunch of chairs that don’t match…make them!

Got an old table? A simple lick of paint will spruce it up.

Tea lights…minimum effort…maximum effect.

Eating for one? Eating for two? You still deserve to dress the table up a little.

Don’t like the idea of washing table linen? Invest into some cute placemats.

Great Post Michaela, All five of us sit around a small Freedom table every night for dinner. The kids are now huge and I just laugh as we all squeeze around what is known as the Dell’s dining table. We knock knees etc, but I reakon this memory of getting around the small Freedom dining table is what the kids will take with them into their own families one day.

Emma…I know exactly what you mean! My table thought it was an office for a while there…

Thanks Belinda. That’s hilarious, especially with such tall men in your family! You know how large our family is….we all fit around the tiniest of tables…don’t know how we managed, but we didn’t really notice as kids. We were just worried about who would get to the food the quickest!
