The Hair Scare.

The dictionary defines perspective as “a way of regarding situations or facts and judging their relative importance”. It’s all about how we look at things and it determines how we react to them. Perspective has the power to change the way we think and feel and how we view the world. Do we focus on the details or do we step back and see the big picture?

Over the next few days, our family room writers will be taking a look at perspective and sharing their thoughts on this wide-ranging topic. We hope you will be challenged, inspired and entertained.

It’s all about perspective.

Is your glass half empty or half full? Are you facing a mountain or a molehill? A crisis or a catastrophe? It all depends on your perspective.

As the mother of two teenagers – and one pre-teen – I’m quickly learning that boundaries will be pushed, patience will be tested and limits will be stretched more than ever before.

But one of my jobs in this season is keeping things in perspective. Making sure I don’t go into meltdown when the music gets too loud or the phone calls go on too long or the number of school friends in the house rivals the cast of High School Musical. That I allow freedom within limits but am consistent in saying no when the situation demands it.

My daughter expertly tested this take on perspective just a few weeks ago, as she was turning 13. She asked for highlights in her hair. Fearing she was far too young for such a radical makeover, I refused.

Days later, she returned with a new tactic. Could she be sponsored to dye her blonde hair brown for a charity event?

No. (Sorry, I know it’s for charity, but it seemed more about hair colour than raising funds).

How about blue then, she asked.

No.

Red?

No.

Green?

No, no way, not ever.

How about highlights then?

Oh, ok.

Suddenly, highlights sounded like the safe option and I relented. We visited the salon together and, with the help of an understanding stylist, achieved what could be described as a natural, sun-kissed glow.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Bad parenting 101. Complete U-turn. How could I be so utterly inconsistent?

Well, what can I say? Blue hair or highlights – what would you choose?

I love it. I love the back and forth and the obvious pushing of the boundaries. This is hilarious and resonates with me as I’m sure it has many others. How many times have we had those kinds of conversations in our homes.
Well done, Deborah and thanks for sharing.
