about susan
this is me.....
Susan Sohn, is a Canadian-born, writer, speaker, talk-radio host, and social media personality. Through her online communities: thefamilyroom, susanjsohn.com, and RealLife, internet radio shows and podcasts: RealLife with Susan Sohn, live thefamilyroom events, newspaper columns, television and media appearances, Susan Sohn is communicating her passion:
“Building extraordinary families, developing relationships and strengthening the communities we live in.”
Having lived in Hong Kong, Sydney, and Los Angeles, Susan and her husband Philip currently reside in Calgary, Canada with their three wonderful children: Sophia, Gabriel and Ella.
A natural gatherer of people, Susan’s vivacious personality and “straight talk” style, makes her a friend and mentor to many. She is a fearless and compassionate woman.
Susan Sohn was born and raised in the Canadian Prairies. She started in business at an early age, becoming Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the age of 18 in 1988. After her family moved to Hong Kong in 1990, Susan began her career in media advertising in the Asia-Pacific region.
She held various positions, including being the associate publisher of Expression Magazine (the American Express Member Magazine), being the media/advertising representative for the regional American Express Platinum Card magazine, and major US publications in the Asia-Pacific region such as the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, Worth Magazine, Sunset Magazine and in Canada the Globe and Mail. Through this work Susan travelled extensively managing clients, accounts and other representatives.
By 1998, at the age of 28, Susan and her husband Philip semi-retired, and moved to Sydney Australia to start a family. While both she and her husband were contemplating becoming ministers, they became intrigued with creating media, marketing and working with young people.
In 1999, they started a 360 degree multi-disciplinary creative consultancy M Collective in Sydney with a handful of talented twenty-something designers and producers. Specialising in product and event marketing, the company eventually worked with such brands as BMW/Mini, Panasonic, Nestle and the Sydney 2000 Olympics Committee as well as not-for-profit organizations such as Compassion and Opportunity International.
Notably, Susan was the outsourced Marketing Manager for the annual Hillsong Conference between 2000 to 2005, implementing global PR, sponsorship and event marketing campaigns, that was part of the exponential growth of the event from 10,000 to over 30,000 delegates.
In 2005, Susan decided to pursue her true passions: speaking, writing, building family and community. She launched thefamilyroom: a multi-platform community which encompassed an online presence and blog, radio podcasts, small group gatherings, large scale events, media and television appearances.
By 2008, after a stint in Los Angeles, Susan returned to Canada to reside in Calgary. She continues to contribute to thefamilyroom online community and newspaper column, as well as initiating her RealLife social media network, Real Life with Susan Sohn internet talk-radio show, and creating the next series of thefamilyroom events in Canada, USA, and Australia.
Her children’s book Elephant Shoes is currently in development.
