Steve Jobs Takes a Stand!

June 9, 2010

I have always been an APPLE fan and that decision has once again been confirmed. Mr. Jobs {Steve to those of us who are his friends…..or, think they are :) } has taken a stand that I applaud wholeheartedly. Finally, someone of influence saying NO and doing what he can {which, by the way is a lot} to make a difference.

Some are saying that in taking this stand Mr. Jobs is ’suppressing people’s freedom’ well I say what about protecting those who’s freedom has been taken from them, who’s innocence has been robbed. WAKE UP critics, he’s protecting children, he’s protecting the least among us and we need to support him. In terms of suppressing my freedom I say GO AHEAD MR. JOBS suppress my freedom {if that’s how we’re going to look at it} and suppress the freedom of my entire family and in doing so may I be the first mother of 3 gorgeous children to say a HUGE THANK YOU.

Go for it Mr. Jobs, keep doing what you do and we will keep stocking our desks, our pockets, our ears and everything else with your products.

The families and individuals that have been affected by the above mentioned have another mover and shaker standing in their corner saying enough is enough! About time! I hope, pray & believe other industry leaders join this voice until it’s defeaning! In the words of journalist Marc Estes – may he continue to stand by his principles and may his tribe increase.

I think that is an AWESOME powerful stand !!! Congrats on standing up for your morales against the grain of so called society. I think it will boost his company into another bracket where many will be suprised! I have never understood why you would need porn on your phone while at work or wherever anyhow. IF you need to watch it wouldnt you prefer to do it in the privacy of your own bedroom? Why take it out into public? This is a direct result in so many sex crimes, such as adultery, rape ect…

Just to play devil’s advocate here, we should be aware that Apple is actually playing both sides of the fence. Contrary to what the linked article says, Apple is not blocking ANY sites from ANY of its devices. They are simply not allowing pornographic content into the App store. In fact Jobs has repeatedly said that if you want to build an Objective-C based app you need to play by their rules. If you don’t want to play by there rules you can build an HTML5 Web app. This way Apple customers can access whatever they want on their devices and Apple gets to look pristine as they only pocket 30% of the “respectable” profit. Personally I support the decision but it seems to be motivated much more by brand protection than altruism.

Also for parents to keep in mind. A pornography section in the App Store managed by Apple would necessarily have age limits.
On the other hand, your kids can access any website (designed for the iPhone) they want through the web browser sometimes without any age verification. Pleas don’t outsource your parenting to Apple.

Jeremy,
Thanks for your comment. I agree the move is probably more brand protection that altruism however, whatever the case maybe at least someone of his calibre is saying SOMETHING.

I TOTALLY agree that parents must NOT outsource their parenting to Apple. Sadly, it is the case and there is an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality. Some parents are totally unaware of online activity and then wonder ~ why?

We need to continue these conversations and take whatever steps we can to protect our kids and this feels like a step in the right direction, heck at least it’s being acknowledged.

Thanks for weighing in and giving some techy info. Helps all of us navigate a little better.
Susan
